FOR COLORADO
MEET PHIL
Dedicated to Serving Others
Phil Weiser is dedicated to serving others. He believes our government should work for the people, not corporations or special interests. As Attorney General, Phil has stood up to protect the rule of law and our democracy, and he led the charge against irresponsible companies that ripped off Coloradans. He works every day to make our state safer and more affordable. And as our next governor, he’ll continue to build on the progress that makes Colorado such a great place to live.
Phil learned firsthand the importance of advocating for others while working in the U.S. Supreme Court as a clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg helped inspire Phil to always fight injustice and stand up for our freedoms and equality justice for all.
Experienced leadership
Phil also worked in the Obama and Clinton administrations at the U.S. Department of Justice and the White House, where he worked to expand access to broadband internet, develop programs to encourage entrepreneurship, and stop corporate monopolies from taking advantage of consumers.
At the University of Colorado, Phil taught constitutional and antitrust law, served as Dean of the Law School, and founded a center on law, technology, and entrepreneurship. And he founded successful nonprofits that support startup businesses across Colorado as well as served as the chair of Governor Ritter’s Innovation Council.
American values
As the son and grandson of Holocaust survivors, Phil has dedicated his career to ensuring that all people—no matter their gender, ethnicity, faith, or who they love—are free from discrimination, hatred, and oppression. His commitment to these American values is rooted in his family’s story.
Phil’s mother was born in captivity in the Buchenwald concentration camp, where his grandmother was imprisoned by the Nazis during World War II. American soldiers from the U.S. Army liberated the concentration camp, including Phil’s mother, grandmother, and others who survived the Holocaust.
Committed to you
Following the war, Phil’s family immigrated to the United States as refugees—looking for a new life that offered opportunity, freedom, and equality for all. A first-generation American, Phil knows firsthand the promise of America and is committed to upholding its ideals of liberty and justice for all.
Phil lives in Denver with his wife, Dr. Heidi Wald. They have two children, one in college, one in high school, and a (mostly) well-behaved dog named Zeke.
Accomplishments
WORKING FOR COLORADANS
As governor, Phil will continue to move Colorado forward. That means…
- Making Colorado more affordable and bringing down the cost of living—from housing costs and childcare to grocery bills and prescription drugs
- Standing up for our rights and reproductive freedoms
- Creating safer communities and protecting our land, air, and water for our kids and grandchildren
- Empowering Coloradans by expanding access to education and career-training, addressing our youth mental health crisis, and establishing a voluntary service program for young people.
Putting working families first
As Colorado’s Attorney General, Phil went to bat time and again to ensure that Coloradans’ rights and freedoms are protected, that they aren’t taken advantage of by irresponsible companies, and that they can afford to live in their communities, support their families, and thrive. That means:
- Looking out for your pocketbook. Phil went to court to stop a corporate mega-merger between Safeway and King Soopers that would drive up the cost of food and force dozens of local grocery stores to close in dozens of Colorado communities.
- Increasing access to affordable housing. When a corporate landlord defrauded their tenants, Phil held them accountable and got money back to folks who had been ripped off.
- Protecting the right to choose. Phil fought for and supported the Reproductive Health Equity Act, which ensures doctors in Colorado will be able to provide abortion care to women who need it, regardless of where they’re traveling from.
- Standing up to companies that harmed Coloradans and getting justice for people. Phil recovered approximately $800 million from pharmaceutical companies responsible for the opioid crisis. When vaping companies pushed their products onto our kids, he held them accountable. And Phil is taking on Big Tech, leading the charge for increased data privacy and more protections for kids using social media.
- Keeping our elections free and fair. Phil held people accountable for voter intimidation and attempts to harm the integrity of our elections. And he prosecuted a rogue county clerk for violating her oath of office and compromising her county’s election security.
- Standing up to the federal government to protect Coloradans’ rights. Phil successfully defended the Affordable Care Act from the Trump Administration, sued the federal government for illegally withholding funds from Colorado police and sheriffs, and stopped the federal government from undermining laws that protect our air and water.
