Why It Matters
When I ran for my first elected office in 2018, I committed to serving as an Attorney General who would be the People’s Lawyer. Three years later, we have much to show for our time in office—and we have more work to do. For Colorado, it’s critical that we continue this work.
Since I took the oath as your Attorney General, our team and I have:
Challenged illegal actions by federal agencies and protected Colorado, won critical cases at the U.S. Supreme Court that included the defense of the Affordable Care Act and the protection of DREAMers. I also argued before the Supreme Court in a successful defense of Colorado’s election integrity.
Brought $400 million to Colorado by suing Big Pharma and its corporate leaders for their illegal actions that fueled the opioid crisis and created a bottom-up framework with local mayors and county commissioners to responsibly invest those funds towards drug treatment, recovery, education, and prevention.
Protected public safety and improved our criminal justice system, including
investigating and prosecuting drug cartels that push deadly fentanyl into our communities;
going after fraudsters that steal Coloradans’ identities to bilk our state’s unemployment insurance funds;
improving public safety by creating employment opportunities for offenders leaving prison who served their sentence and earned their release;
defending firearm safety measures that keep weapons out of the hands of those that assault their significant others or kids;
suing the federal government when it illegally withheld critical funds meant to support Colorado police and sheriffs; and
leading on the recruitment, retention, and training of responsible law enforcement professionals and supporting their mental health.
Stood up for consumers by returning over $28 millions of dollars to Coloradans, including holding companies like CenturyLink, Wells Fargo, DIRECTV, and Stubhub accountable for treating consumers unfairly and sued Navient for mistreating Colorado student borrowers, providing $35 million in debt relief on student loans.
Fought to Hold Social Media Giants Accountable. In 2021, we learned that social media companies took actions that hurt Coloradans, particularly our kids. Our office is working to hold them accountable, including bringing national antitrust suits. I discuss those actions in this op-ed.
Continued to protect our land, air, and water, holding accountable those who pollute our air, defending critical protections that address climate change, successfully pushing for tougher penalties for those who intentionally pollute Colorado waters, and advocating for major funding for Colorado’s long-term water needs and infrastructure.
