John - Gunnison County

“Many people in CO, perhaps most people, receive some amount of water from the Colorado River. It’s a statewide issue. Right now, we are in crisis mode in negotiating issues related to the hydrology, which is very dry. The climate forecast indicates that that will continue indefinitely into the future.
— John, Gunnison County

John is the General Counsel for the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District. He has constituents in 3 counties: Saguache, Gunnison, and Hinsdale. The Gunnison River is a major tributary of the Colorado River. With the area experiencing the firsthand effects of climate change, the upcoming negotiations with our surrounding states will be both important and challenging. “The Attorney General’s office is heavily involved in discussions and negotiations around the states in the Colorado River basin,” John explained. “Having [an Attorney General] who is well trained and educated, and has a lot of experience in policy and public issues, is important. I think Phil Weiser is the man who has those qualifications.”

As Attorney General, I will lead in water management, bolstering our mutually beneficial relationships with surrounding states while protecting Colorado’s allocation of river water, ensuring that the compact remains viable in the future. I will also fight hard to address the reality of climate change, which has lead to historic drought conditions across the state and put communities who rely on agriculture in crisis mode. Working with people like John, I will address our water challenges with innovative and collaborative strategies.
