Defend our civil rights and civil liberties

In America, we believe in civil rights for everyone, including the rights of people of color, women, LGBTQ, religious freedom, freedom of the press, and the humane and fair treatment of immigrants.

The issue of civil rights is very personal to me and my family. Both my wife Heidi and myself are the children of Holocaust survivors. In Heidi’s case, her dad left on the last boat from Germany that made it to the United States—the one before the St. Louis that was famously turned back. My mom was born in a concentration camp, Buchenwald, after my grandparents survived the Holocaust. With this legacy, I know that it is important for our Attorneys General across the U.S. to stand up for religious freedom and our constitutional values.

Our constitutional rights cannot be taken for granted. We cannot count on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division serving as a cop on the beat to protect the rights of all Americans as it did under President Obama. Thankfully, we have an independent judiciary that can vindicate our constitutional rights when we have states Attorneys General willing to protect the equal rights of all Americans and to ensure the fair treatment of immigrants and refugees.
